George "Corkey" Miller, who often introduced himself as the "tongue-tied sheriff of Ashe County," has died.
Miller used his speech impediment to charm and disarm people during two terms as sheriff in the 1970s, friends remember. He was also U.S. marshal for the Middle District of North Carolina, appointed by President Carter in 1977, and was the police chief of North Wilkesboro from 1984 until 1990.
Miller, 77, had been hospitalized recently. He died Sunday in St. Augustine, Fla., where he had been living with a daughter. He will be buried Monday in West Jefferson City Cemetery.
