CANBERRA, June 1 Asia Pulse - Japan will put its relationship with Australia in jeopardy if it slaughters humpback whales in the Southern Ocean under its "scientific" whaling program, Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull says.
Overnight, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) passed a resolution upholding a 21-year moratorium on commercial whaling.
But the resolution will have no effect on Japan's scientific whaling fleet, which has been taking advantage of a loophole in the anti-whaling sanctions and plans to take more than 1,000 whales this year.
Mr Turnbull said he made a final plea to Japan before leaving the IWC summit in Alaska, asking them to stop the slaughter.
"We have a very good relationship with Japan - Japan is a good friend of Australia's and Australia is a good friend of Japan's - so this is one disagreement among many other issues on which we agree," Mr Turnbull told ABC ...
