SEOUL, June 1 Asia Pulse - President Roh Moo-hyun said Thursday that his government will keep pressuring North Korea to abandon its missile and nuclear weapons programs, despite its "Sunshine Policy" toward the reclusive communist state.
In an interview with the Associated Press, the president also said that an inter-Korean summit will be realized this year at the earliest, as soon as North Korea fully implements a February agreement to scrap its nuclear weapons program in a verifiable manner.
"The fact that the Korean government is practicing the Sunshine Policy toward North Korea does not mean that we forfeit all rights to take issue with North Korea's missile launches and nuclear test. Although we fully embrace the Sunshine Policy, I believe that what has to be said, has to be said," Roh said in the interview with AP President and CEO Tom Curley.
"Regardless of my term, I believe a good time would be when the six-party talks are well on (their) way to implementation and when we can be sure that a summit will contribute to cementing this progress," said the president.
Roh said his government's recent offer to help resolve a U.S.-North Korea banking dispute surrounding North Korean funds frozen in Macau-based Banco Delta Asia (BDA) accounts has not been heeded by either side.
