WASHINGTON, May 14 (UPI) -- Hollywood and Broadway make money on spelling bees but many education professionals don't view the contests as a good way to learn to spell.

First grade teacher Sue Ann Gleason of Cedar Grove Elementary School in Virginia said she thinks spelling bees merely honor children who already know how to spell and do little to support those who need explicit instruction, The Washington Post reported Monday.
