Washington -- Warmer temperatures signal the arrival of spring but also contribute to snow melts and the risk of flooding in certain parts of the country. That means there is no better time for consumers to assess whether they are adequately covered for flood-related losses, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

More than 20% of all flood insurance claims are filed in low-to-moderate flood-risk areas, the institute has found, and too few consumers realize that affordable flood insurance is available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's National Flood Insurance Program.
