May 17--Athens residents can expect to pay up to $2.50 more per month for garbage collection beginning in October.

The Athens-Clarke Solid Waste Department is seeking to raise its rates 50 cents a month for curbside pickup and $2.50 a month for backyard pickup. For the most common household trash volume, 64 gallons, that would mean a monthly charge of $17 for curbside or $22 for backyard service.

Only residents who live inside the old Athens city limits -- now known as the Urban Service District -- will be affected. Residents of formerly unincorporated Clarke County must use private garbage collection firms.
