"Why would you want to do that?!" was the reply I heard more than once when I mentioned that I might trade my Yamaha V Star 1100 Silverado for a scooter. A scooter?! I loved my bike and had been on many memorable rides. But the fact was, lately my bike was doing more garage time than road time. I needed to take a closer look at my riding likes, dislikes and style.

I had never even considered the possibility of a scooter before. After all, I thought, they aren't even real motorcycles! Sure, they might be great for starving college students, but not for someone who is a serious motorcycle enthusiast.
Then I had the opportunity to take a vacation in Italy. Scooters-Piaggios, Hondas, Yamahas, Suzukis and Kymcos-were everywhere. My eyes were opened; scooters are a serious option for two-wheel transport. As I watched the riders, I was amazed to see how well they negotiated the chaotic traffic.
