Over the years, CONSUMER REPORTS has tested just about everything you can think of. Below, at left, is a photograph from our archives. Send us your best guess as to what we were testing.

Oven mitts, egg cartons, dinner rolls, and cake mixes were just some of the guesses about the photo at right. But we were testing foam-rubber mattresses, in 1954. (There was no such thing until wartime production techniques lowered the price of foam rubber.) Elinor Desosa of Otter Rock, Ore., is our winner, chosen randomly from nine correct entries.
