JAKARTA, May 1 Asia Pulse - Manpower and Transmigration Minister Erman Suparno said his ministry had set itself the target of reducing the country's unemployed by two million this year.
"We have reduced the number of unemployed people from 11.9 million in 2005 to 10.9 million in 2006. In 2007, our target is to reduce the number further by about 1.5 to 2 million," he said here on Monday.
He said the success in reducing the number of unemployed could not be claimed by the government alone but also by various sides who had also contributed their share to the efforts.
In order to achieve the 2007 target, the minister hoped that various innovative breakthroughs would be made in line with the government's drive to eliminate poverty.
He said the fact that the unemployment rate was still high was due to the carry-over effect of the previous years' high rate of unemployed people.
The work force's growth rate was higher than the rate of job opportunities created in past years, he added.
