WASHINGTON, May 1 Asia Pulse - The United States kept South Korea on its intellectual property rights (IPR) "watch list" in this year's annual report Monday but noted a recently concluded trade pact will lead to significant improvements.
"Special 301 Report," issued by the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), categorizes trading partners according to effectiveness of IPR protection. Twelve countries, with an emphasis on China and Russia, were put on the "priority watch list" as those not providing an adequate level of protection or enforcement.
Thirty partners, including South Korea, were put on the lower-level watch list that constitutes nations needing bilateral attention.
South Korea and the U.S. concluded negotiations last month for a free trade agreement that covers the IPR sector. The report welcomed the "far-reaching IPR commitments" South Korea agreed to undertake under the deal.
