CANBERRA, April 30 Asia Pulse - Federal Labor today teamed up with state governments to commission an Australian version of the Stern report on climate change.
But the federal government accused Labor of keeping voters in the dark by not planning to complete the review by economist Professor Ross Garnaut until long after this year's federal election.
The coalition last month rejected a request by state and territory Labor governments to conduct a Stern-style review.
Economist Sir Nicholas Stern, in a report commissioned by the British government and released last year, suggested global warming could shrink the global economy by 20 per cent.
Labor leader Kevin Rudd said he and state leaders had been forced to act after Prime Minister John Howard's failure to address the key issue.
Mr Rudd said the report would outline the threat to the country's economic prosperity and investigate mitigation strategies.
State governments will fund the project, with Queensland Acting Premier Anna Bligh calling it a modest investment.
