MELBOURNE, May 1 Asia Pulse - Small companies will get a .4 billion ($US1.16 billion) boost to help them gain a foothold in global manufacturing in next week's federal budget, Fairfax newspapers report today.

The 10-year program, to be announced when federal Treasurer Peter Costello brings down the budget on Tuesday, will include:

- a $254-million program to help small and medium businesses win better access to global manufacturing chains, with support for small firms to sell their goods and services to corporations in export markets;

- $90.3 million for research and development for small and medium businesses;
