CANBERRA, May 1 Asia Pulse - Prime Minister John Howard today promised next week's budget would be economically responsible and maintain a strong surplus.
Mr Howard said he was well aware that low interest rates meant many households had substantial debt.
He said the best thing that any government could do was keep the economy strong and that could not be guaranteed with Labor's workplace relations plan.
"I can guarantee that this will be an economically responsible budget," Mr Howard told ABC radio.
"I can guarantee it will have a strong surplus and I can guarantee that it will reinforce the proposition that interest rates will always be lower under the coalition than under Labor."
Mr Howard rejected the suggestion that the coalition intended to spend its way back into government with the budget.
"We have been developing some industry policy and you will hear more about that later," he said.
