DRIVEN TO DRIVER 
 
   First you perceive it as a kind of absence, 
   an unravelling, a knot loosened and unpicked, 
   the skeins of gut rolled back to their 
   smooth rippling. 
 
                  Pain was your life's partner, 
   but somewhere there's been a divorce-not 
   a major bust up, but a slow drifting: 
   movements apart so imperceptible 
   they hardly register at first. 
 
                                   Then it's gone,
