The tolerance of Islam.(Letters)(Letter to the editor)
SIR: In the December issue, Lawrence Burke ("The Growing Intolerance Towards Islam") records the intriguing observation: "I have worked and travelled in the Middle East for six years. I am taken with the integration of Islam, Christianity and Judaism in Syria, Egypt, Jordan and Iran."
"Integration", when Jews are prohibited by Jordan's Law no. 6, sect. 3 [1954], still in force, from becoming citizens?
"Integration", when Syria's and Egypt's Jewish populations are now each down to about 100 souls, whereas, in 1948, they numbered 30,000 and 75,000 respectively?
"Integration", when Iran's 1979 population of 100,000 Jews is now down to about 25,000 and show trials in 2000 accused thirteen Jews of spying for Israel. In a closed court, ten, denied their own lawyers, were, after forced "confessions", found guilty by the judge cum prosecutor and jailed for up to nine years.
Just what "integration" was witnessed by Burke? If there are any Jews at all (non-citizens, of course) left in Jordan, how are they "integrated" amongst 6,000,000 Jordanians? How are 100 Jews "integrated" into Syria's 18,000,000 and Egypt's 77,000,000? And how well are the remaining 25,000 Jews "integrating" amongst Iran's 68,000,000 after the trauma of the show trials?
A most Orwellian abuse of the word integration.
