Several years ago, I discovered a quotation by the Irish poet William Butler Yeats: "Education is not the filling of a pail. Rather it is the lighting of a spark." Those words have stayed with me and have helped to define my thinking about the importance of music and the arts in our society--and especially in our educational system.
