State Would Fund Private Schooling
SANTA FE -- Gov. Gary Johnson, saying he wants to be responsible for improving education in New Mexico, unveiled wide-ranging reform proposals Wednesday that include private school vouchers.
The Republican governor said he will submit his plans to the state's 1998 Legislature, which convenes in January. The Democrat-controlled Legislature rejected some of the proposals in earlier sessions.
Johnson wants to provide more money to public schools and to establish a voucher system that would allow parents state grants to send their children to private schools, if they wish.
