On the face of it the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) precautionary issuing of a prohibition notice on some of Falcon Crane Hire's fleet was swift work. The banning order came four days after a second fatal crane collapse. The scientist and engineers in the HSE's lab in Derbyshire had only just received the stricken crane - commendably fast work. Or was it?
Was it that evidence emerging from the investigation into the Battersea incident had raised suspicions? After all, the Battersea crane has been in the HSE's lab for several months and the investigation team may well have had a good idea of the sequence of events leading to the collapse. If the suspected causes were faults that should have
