Apr. 17--A storm that rolled through North Carolina on Sunday night packing high winds and heavy rainfall caused power outages to nearly 200,000 Duke Energy customers statewide -- including 36,000 in Northwest North Carolina -- and downed trees and power lines throughout the area.
Bursts of wind on Sunday carried snow and rain throughout counties farther west, prompting school closings and delays.
In Forsyth County, city crews worked throughout the day to remove limbs and trees that covered roadways. Some streets in the Buena Vista area in Winston-Salem were blocked for most of the day, and traffic was rerouted because of downed trees and power lines. There also were reports of downed trees blocking Old Greensboro Road and Shattalon Drive.
