HERB ALPERT donated $300,000 to the Smithsonian Institution to support Jazz Appreciation Month each April through 2009. The famed trumpeter, bandleader (The Tijuana Brass) and record-company founder (A & M Records) spoke with the magazine's David Zax.

When my partner and I saw it, we thought maybe it was pushing it a little too much. But it seemed like a lot of people bought the album just for the cover. I think it's one of my best albums.
