In this era of globalization, understanding international issues and relations is imperative. In my case, while a graduate seminarian in the early 1990s, the liberation theologies and movements of Latin America drew my attention. I began to apprehend that, in addition to learning the general background and contemporary reality of those nations, it was crucial for me and my fellow Americans to know our own country's role in the Latin American context. I was humbled and horrified to realize that often our silence became the voice of complicity, allowing untold atrocities to occur throughout the world.
