As reported last year by THE NEW AMERICAN ("Betrayed in the Line of Duty," September 18), the drug smuggler who was shot by two Border Patrol agents near El Paso, Texas, in February 2005, brought another van load of drugs across the border while he was waiting to testify against the agents. Mexican drug smuggler Osbaldo Aldrete-Davila was given immunity by federal prosecutors, along with free medical treatment and a special border crossing pass, to entice him to testify against Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean.
During the trial of agents Ramos and Compean, the prosecutors and the judge suppressed the evidence regarding Aldrete-Davila's second drug-smuggling operation. Allowing jurors to know that the government's star witness against the officers was engaged in ...
