Ray Heilwagen served with the U.S. Army's 79th Infantry Division during World War II. He served in France from July through November 1944, when he was injured in combat and hospitalized with a leg injury. Heilwagen received a Purple Heart for his wound and a Bronze Star for his brave and meritorious service.
"We were in combat continuously, every day almost," recalled Heilwagen in an interview with the Hannibal (Missouri) Courier-Post. "We were in a battle and received small arms fire, then a German mortar came in and exploded. It blew me into the river, and I had about five pieces of shrapnel in my right leg."
While he was being treated by medics, Heilwagen pulled out his billfold to look at pictures. Later he was taken to a French hospital, where the shrapnel was removed from his leg.
"They were getting ready to ship me out to another hospital, and I looked for my billfold, and it was gone," Heilwagen continued. Many years passed, and he forgot about the billfold.
