Little wonder that Renee Roman Klein and Zoe Schaeffer, both of whom have dedicated their young-adult lives to fashion journalism, named their Los Angeles boutique Presse. Between them they worked at eight fashion magazines before becoming colleagues
at a New York-based retail consulting company where they tracked emerging designers and forecast fashion and global consumer trends. "We were fashion's weathergirls," chirps Schaeffer. "But we always wanted to open up our own clothing shop."
After a clandestine coffee break, the two retooled
their respective business proposals as a single venture and targeted Los Angeles as the place to hang their shingle. "There is a real void in L.A.," says Klein. "There's all this 'fast fashion' there, and the shops are underestimating the sophistication level of their customers."
