The oldest part of London, settled by the Romans and now called the City of London, is home to the country's financial district as well as to the trade guilds and livery companies that began in the Middle Ages. One of these organizations, the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, received its royal charter in 1327 as the Wardens and Commonalty of the Mystery of Goldsmiths of the City of London. Since that time it has been responsible for hallmarking silver and gold articles; the very word hallmark derives from the process of craftsmen bringing their work to Goldsmiths' Hall for assaying and marking.
