BOSTON (MarketWatch) - The Centers for Disease Control said Thursday that it has determined Merck & Co.'s RotaTeq vaccine to prevent rotavirus infections in young children is safe, adding that any incidence of side effects falls in an acceptable range.

More specifically, the CDC said that new safety data showed Merck's RotaTeq did not carry an elevated risk of developing intussusception, a common cause of bowel obstruction in infants that can be life-threatening. The CDC reviewed the data after receiving reports that the vaccine had triggered intussusception in some infants.
