OVERVIEW:
Sales of cars and trucks in Australia continued to increase to record levels in February.
The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) said 81,009 new vehicles were sold during the month, an improvement of 6.8 per cent year-on-year.
Cumulative sales during the first two months of 2005 gained seven per cent on-year to 150,574 units.
OUTLOOK:
Heartened by the sales, the FCAI has forecast full year sales at 980,000 units after chalking up sales of just above 955,000 last year.
Leading carmaker Toyota Australia has the same forecast figure.
Toyota's executive chairman John Conomos said the higher market would be driven by strong competition between the leading brands and a host of new model releases.
He said there were also fears in the local economy with minor adjustments to interest rates and the continued strength of the housing market unlikely to dampen demand.
Holden was the market leader in February with 15,193 sales, just ahead of Toyota...
