The first two volumes of Acta Pataviensia Austriaca, a series which is publishing papal acta concerning the diocese of Passau and the dukes of Austria, were reviewed in this JOURNAL xlv (1994), 728-9. In the introduction to the present volume, devoted to the pontificate of Urban v, the editor describes the manuscript sources used. The principal ones - all in the Vatican Archives - are the registers of petitions (Registra supplicationum), the Avignon Registers, containing for the most part common letters (that is, letters issued in response to petitions), and the Vatican Registers, which consist in part of selective copies of the Avignon Registers and in part of registers of the …
