Sir Menzies Campbell will mark the beginning of his second year as Liberal Democrat leader this weekend with a "lively" debate on Trident.

Determined to show the country he is a tough and decisive leader, the 65-year-old will use the party's spring gathering in Harrogate to push through a third way proposal on nuclear armament.

With the Labour leadership succession likely to provoke an early election, current polls suggest the Lib Dems' share of seats would slide back from its current high water mark.

With that prospect firmly in their minds, the party will need to capture the attention of voters.
