A contractor offers you a free or discounted inspection. He pokes around your furnace and says that it's leaking carbon monoxide and must be replaced immediately before the gas kills you. He then swaps your perfectly good unit with one taken from his previous victim. Furnace scams like this tend to heat up as the weather cools down, according to the Better Business Bureau.

HOW TO SPOT THEM

Steer clear of a contractor who tries to scare you into any kind of service. Also beware of a tool-less tech--even an inspector with an eagle eye and a hound-dog nose can't detect colorless, odorless carbon-monoxide gas without a CO tester or combustion analyzer.
