Mercedes-Benz's French-built two-seat Smart ForTwo has been sold in Europe since 1998 and recently became available in Canada. A redesigned Smart ForTwo that will meet U. S. safety and emissions rules is due in 2008. Its base price is expected to be about $15,000. But don't whip out your wallet yet.
Although it turns heads and fits into little parking spaces, the Canadian Smart is one of the worst cars we've tested. Road test. The ride is harsh and fidgety. Handling is clumsy. The slow, unassisted steering requires lots of turning when cornering, but the 29-foot turning circle is the tightest we've ever measured. Electronic stability control keeps the car secure at its handling limits.
