DHAKA, March 1 Asia Pulse - A 5 per cent increase in electricity tariffs for urban consumers comes into effect today.

According to a decision taken by the caretaker government on February 6, the 5 per cent tariff will only apply to consumers living in urban areas and using over 100 units of power.

The last time tariffs were raised was done in September in 2003 by the then BNP-led alliance government.

Power Ministry officials said the tariff raise would only apply to the DESA (Dhaka Electric Supply Authority), DESCO (Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited) and PBD (Power Development Board) consumers, meaning -- the Rural Electrification Board consumers will not be hit by the price hike.
