Library talk focuses on local black neighborhoods, communities: They have 'remarkable history,' speaker says.

Feb. 26--Langdon Oppermann looks like novelist Harper Lee in her prime.

Oppermann, a historic preservationist, spoke at the Central Library yesterday about African-American Neighborhoods in Winston-Salem from 1870 to 1950. The program was one of several held in February in honor of Black History Month. About 25 people attended. In the 1990s, Oppermann researched black neighborhoods in Winston-Salem and compiled a report. While surveying 2,000 buildings, she found "a really remarkable history" of how black neighborhoods developed in Winston-Salem.
