Labelled Britain's fastest growing white-collar crime, identity theft is rife.

Police and government departments have campaigned to get people to destroy statements and receipts that hold vital address, date of birth and bank account details.

But the message isn't getting through. The ICO survey shows a third of people in the South West discard personal documents without shredding them first. This figure rose to 60 per cent among 16 to 25-year-olds - the age group that is least protective of personal details.
