We had the opportunity earlier this summer to see Bonnie Raitt and her band and Richard Thompson perform live at Wolf Trap in Northern Virginia. Raitt, now all of 55, sang with throaty conviction, touching on emotional regions that elude the grasp of lesser, indeed younger, vocalists. It was the end of the U.S. leg of her tour, and the band was tired. With the exception of Bonnie's vocal performance, the set was uninspired, something even the inventive guitar work of ex-Range George Marinelli couldn't fix.
