Feb. 21--SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The first time White Sox general manager Kenny Williams tossed Brandon McCarthy's name on the table over the winter, Jon Daniels had to fight to keep his voice from shaking when he answered. The White Sox and Rangers had been talking off and on about potential deals for months, since the 2006 season had ended, but kept running into dead ends. The Rangers GM had been told early on not to bother asking about McCarthy; he wasn't available. The Sox wanted to unload right-hander Jon Garland. The Rangers weren't biting. "Basically the talks were dead, going nowhere," Daniels said here the other day. "And then he called me back and said McCarthy might be available in the right deal." It was the magic bullet as far as Daniels was concerned. McCarthy was precisely who the Rangers had wanted all along. Two days before Christmas, the trade was announced.
