Hot chocolate supercharged with plant compounds could boost brain power and fight heart disease and cancer, new research suggests.
Scientists yesterday described studies showing how cocoa enriched with plant substances called flavanols appeared to improve blood flow.
One team led by Dr Ian Macdonald, from the University of Nottingham, found that a flavanol-rich cocoa increased the supply of blood to thinking parts of the brain.
In the pilot study, 16 young women aged 18 to 30 had their brains scanned after either drinking a low-flavonol cocoa drink, or a special high-flavanol drink.
