While the organ has long been a favorite gospel music instrument, tasteful and well-crafted organ repertoire based on spirituals can be hard to find. Dennis Janzer's Second Organ Book of Spirituals, Op. 20 strikes an appropriate balance between tradition and technique in an engaging assortment of works based on tunes both familiar and less well known, resulting in a volume of delightful versatility. The eight settings, which the composer indicates grew out of "hope and anticipation, joy and freedom, faith and redemption," reflect the timeless appeal of a genre whose sentiments are unabashedly simple yet powerful. At the hands of Janzer, however, each setting receives careful and nuanced treatment, allowing the emotive nature of the melody to remain dominant.
