In 1919 Walter Gropius founded a school of architecture and design in Weimar, Germany, the purpose of which was to unite the creative arts and modern technology of the early twentieth century. Among the subjects covered were painting, handicrafts, theater and industrial design, and typography. After a few years the school moved to a new building, designed by Gropius, in Dessau. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe became director in 1930, but with the rise of the National Socialist regime in 1933 the institution closed and its teachers and students scattered throughout Europe and the United States. They took with them the philosophy of modernism and its primary concept of integration of design.
