In the preface to this XR24 CD sampler, producer Winston Ma says "Some recordings have great music, but with mediocre sonic quality. Likewise, some have great sound, but with little musical value.... I compiled this special edition with meticulous care for both qualities in sound and music, and music and sound." One of the problems putting together any sampler of varied works, though, is that no matter how good the music and recordings are, not every listener is going to like every track. So it was with me and this music, hit and miss. However, the recordings themselves are among the best things I have ever heard, whether I liked the content or not.
Each of the tracks is taken from one of FIM's current or upcoming albums, all of them done up in the XRCD 24-bit, super analog process, which I believe is at this time capable of producing the finest sound on disc. You simply aren't going to hear anything this clean, this dynamic, or this transparent from any other recordings, be they SACDs, DVD-Audio, HD-CD, or whatever. Just be prepared to pay for it.
Let me tell you about a few of things I liked on this record. First up, there's conductor Harold Faberman in his arrangement of Bizet's "Habanera" from Carmen. It's tremendously exciting, with wonderful imaging and sharp percussive effects. Outstanding next is "Autumn ...
