ORLANDO, FLA. -- Depression and comorbid, activity-limiting pain are present in the elderly, regardless of race or socioeconomic status, said Jana Mossey, Ph.D., at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pain Medicine.

Seeking to expand on previous research that looked primarily at white, nonpoor elders, Dr. Mossey and her colleagues studied 600 subjects--half of whom were African American--from urban senior centers, outpatient medical clinics, and a hospital-based social activity network. They found that the deleterious effects of comorbid pain and depression previously reported in more homogenous studies held true for a more diverse population as well, said Dr. Mossey of the Drexel University School of Public Health.
