LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. -- Guilty or not guilty?
Dr. Theresa Freeman-Wang posed this question with regard to whether smoking is associated with the development of multifocal vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia, and rendered a "guilty" verdict as the result of a retrospective study.
Among 80 women with a histologically confirmed diagnosis of severe vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN III), 52 (65%) were current smokers, Dr. Freeman-Wang said at a meeting of the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology.
"The invasive potential of VIN is high--at the very least 10 times higher than for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, and we were trying to identify factors that might predict multifocal disease," she said.
