When designer Aimee Cho was trying to name her new trench-coat line, it was a children's book that came to mind: The Griffin and the Minor Canon, in which a kind half-eagle, half-lion creature lobbies to coexist with some terrified humans. "It's about fighting your own battles," says the 30-year-old Cho, "even though it might not be the easiest path to take." Cho's way had been to venture out from her fashion-writing job at Vogue (where she had worked for six years) to design a line of perfect trench coats, called Gryphon after that brave, mythic animal.
