In his ongoing quest to reunite the words popular and culture, the Metropolitan Opera's high-flying new general manager, Peter Gelb, has enlisted Hollywood auteurs, Broadway directors, modern-dance enfants terribles, and Japanese puppeteers-everyone, it seems, but ventriloquists and trained dogs. Now the maverick composer Tan Dun (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and the brilliant filmmaker Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern) join in with the world premiere of The First Emperor, a sweeping epic (with a libretto co-written by Tan and the National Book Award-winning novelist Ha Jin) starring Placido Domingo as the visionary despot who unified China, built the Great Wall, and ruined his daughter's love life.
