After years of scattered, inconsistent local guidelines, a new set of unified waterpark and water playground safety standards are ready for approval this October that promise to decrease injuries and illnesses--and gain national acceptance.
The standards were developed with the American Society for Testing & Materials, in West Conshohocken, Pa. ASTM's involvement is important because government agencies often adopt its standards.
The standards fall into three categories: water quality, water slides and aquatic play equipment. They are based on guidelines different states and counties had created, which caused a staggering number of regulations across the country. Because standards have not been finalized, sources did not mention specific details about them.
