In an unprecedented effort to combat the No. 1 cause of drowning at ocean beaches, the United States Lifesaving Association and the National and Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have teamed up to educate and warn the public about the dangers of rip currents.
The program commenced this May as USLA and NOAA, which includes the Weather Service and the National Sea Grant program, unveiled a nationwide campaign that includes educational brochures and better cooperation between the two groups.
Rip currents are responsible for nearly 80 percent of the incidents requiring lifeguard beach rescues. The channelized currents that flow away from the shore can sweep even strong swimmers out to sea, said B. Chris Brewster, president of San Diego-based USLA.
"Rip currents appear to cause more deaths than any other weather-related phenomenon," said Brewster.
