I never had any doubts about this recording from the opening notes. It sounds gorgeous. But I did question whether it was a period instruments band playing, given that the first few moments of the opening of Symphony No. 39 features timpani prominently, and they sure sounded period. Yet the strings seemed modern. Turns out that maestro Thomas Fey and his Mannheim Mozart Orchestra use period performance practices and period timpani and brass, but at the same time they use modern strings. So, just as I thought: the best of all worlds, and the results are all the better for it.
Fey and his players take moderate tempos, yet they are lively and energetic, too. Neither symphony is played in quite as an exhilarating manner as Daniel Barenboim played them in his old English Chamber Orchestra readings, but Fey is nevertheless on his toes.
