The question is not whether Scottish teenage prodigy Nicola Benedetti is a good violist; she is. The question is whether she is any better than probably a hundred other violin prodigies her age (she was born in 1987). In any case, there is no doubting one thing: She is probably more attractive than most other young violinists, a fact the DG producers are quick to exploit in over half a dozen CD pictures of the lady. Yes, sex appeal sells, in a television ad as well as in the world of classical music.

Anyhow, Ms. Benedetti plays the violin beautifully, and in a program of light music she demonstrates enough talent to pass an enjoyable hour. The concert begins with Karol Szymanowski's inexplicably neglected Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1, written in 1922 and with which Ms. Benedetti won the 2004 BBC Young Musician of the Year competition.
