Mariss Jansons is probably not the first name that springs to mind when you think of Strauss waltzes, but he acquits himself nicely in Vienna's annual, 2006 New Year's Concert. If only I could say the same for DG's recording.
Jansons makes his debut at this long-running event, following in the footsteps of such conductors as Willi Boskovsky, Herbert von Karajan, Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Muti, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and so many more. Although Jansons' approach to the music of the Strauss family et al is a bit more relaxed than some of these other conductors, he imparts a sweet lilt to the music making, while still maintaining a strong rhythmic drive and dynamic thrust.
As always, the concert features a variety of musical types, alternating (more or less) fast and slow numbers (even if the balance favors the faster things). Of course, there are the two absolutes, "The Blue Danube" and the "Radetzky March," both of which close the show. Then, there ...
