At about 10:30 a.m., a man carrying a black bag entered a coin and comics shop in Roselle, Illinois. The man spoke cordially to shop owner Glen Soustek for several minutes. Then he pulled a "handgun out of the bag and jumped over the counter," reported the Chicago Sun-Times.

The robber, Geoffrey Webb, threatened Soustek, and so Soustek grabbed his own pistol, kicking off a gunfight. Both men were hit by bullets, but Soustek was the one still on his feet when the shooting stopped.
